Governing Body

Pickhill Primary School’s Governing Body is responsible for the following 3 strategic functions:
  • Ensuring the clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well-spent.
The Governing Body appoints the headteacher and delegates the day-to-day running of the school to her.

The Governing Body currently meets three times per term. There are no specific committees so all business is dealt with by all Governors.

The Clerk to the Governors is provided through our SLA with the local authority and is currently Valerie Brown.

There are 12 governors, consisting of:
  • One Local Authority Governor (who is nominated by the Local Authority);
  • Two Parent Governors (who are parents of current or recent pupils and are elected by parents);
  • Five Co-opted Governors (who are asked to join the Governing Body due to specific skills that they possess);
  • Two Staff Governors (who are the headteacher along with a member of staff that is elected by school staff).

It is my hope that I can bring these and other skills to compliment the diversity of the Governing Body as well as learning from those I work alongside. Co-opted Governor

Richard Craw

I have lived in Pickhill for over 20 years and both my children went to Pickhill School.

My working life has been in agricultural business, I am married to Sue who used to work for the LEA. I have travelled widely as part of my job in sales and business management. I moved to Pickhill in 1987. For many years I worked in a job that took me away from home and all over the world but in 2008, tired of endless travel I decided to have a go myself and set up a company importing products for use in animal health in UK. I still travel overseas a little and with spare time on my hands I hope to put something back into our community. I offer a broad spectrum of life and business experience to the Governing Body and look forward to contributing to the school’s development with such a dedicated team of pupils, staff, parents and governors.

Co-opted Governor

Esme Hadley

I was invited to join as a co-opted governor in January 2015. This is my first governor post and I am very excited about it! I decided to become a governor because I wanted to contribute something substantial to my local community and having previously worked in a semi-rural village primary school I have seen first hand the importance of a rich early education for a child to go on to become a thriving young person. In my day job I am a practice nurse with governance playing a large part in the provision of care and whilst it’s a very difficult sector, I hope that the experience and wide range of skills I have from a career in nursing will prove valuable to the governing body. I live in Pickhill with my partner and my dog and spend a lot of time going for walks in our beautiful countryside.

LA Governor

Rosina Gilboy

I come to my Governor’s role with a range of experiences and skills which I hope will benefit the governance of the school. I have been involved within education either as a learner, facilitator/teacher or a parent for many years which has given me an insight into the importance of education for all stakeholders. Having also lived in the local area for over 28 years, I am very aware of the central community role that Pickhill CE School has in the village and surrounding area and as such I am keen to encourage this involvement whenever possible. As a new governor, I will try my utmost to fulfil the role to the best of my ability within the available time I possess.Using my knowledge of PSHCE (personal, social, health and citizen education) and global learning I hope to benefit the school and support key areas such as behaviour and SMSC (social, moral, spiritual and cultural). In addition to this I will try to encourage and support the school’s drive towards becoming a Green Flag Eco School and achieving other global awards as I recognise the importance of these in terms promoting skills, knowledge and understanding of social justice, human rights, interdependence, sustainability and citizenship. Finally, but not least I would like to see the creative and sporting talents of Pickhill pupils flourish!

Parent Governor

Nicky Holmes

I hadn't been living in Pickhill long when I had my daughter, Molly. This school was actually one of my first introduction to the village life as we started coming to events and get togethers here when Molly was just a baby. I've always been impressed by the feel of this school and how it brings the community together and continuing this ethos was one of the reasons I wanted to be a Parent Governor. I bring experience of research and marketing and juggling skills like most parents! I want all of us to be proud of our school and one of my responsibilities is to keep the community informed of what we do.

Term of office start and end date: 27/02/17 - 27/02/2021

Parent Governor

Matthew Cornforth

I have recently become a parent governor as my son started school last September. I wanted to become a Governor so I could become more involved in the local school and help to develop it for future generations. I am a passionate believer in small local schools and feel Pickhill School is the heart of the local community. I live and work on a farm not far from school where I look after pigs and a range of arable crops. I have lived in the area for nearly 12 years. I love living in North Yorkshire as every morning you can see the North Yorkshire Moors on one side of the farm and the Yorkshire dales on the other side of the farm
