Maths

MathsMathsOur aims in mathematics are that the children:

  • Enjoy the subject and study it with a sense of achievement.
  • Achieve a high standard in numeracy and gain a secure foundation of knowledge, skills and concepts to prepare them for the future.
  • Have an understanding of mathematical pattern and relationships.
  • Develop an ability to think logically and to use mathematical language with confidence and understanding.
  • Develop good mental arithmetic and written calculation skills.
  • Develop the skills to work independently or as part of a group.

We encourage our youngest pupils to learn through play and experiment with numbers and then throughout the years we gradually extend children's ability to work more formally. Children regularly work in groups, pairs and alone in order to practise a number of different strategies.

Mathematics lessons are daily and usually have the following structure:

  • An oral and mental starter
  • A main activity with appropriate differentiated work for each child.
  • A plenary session where children assess their own understanding of the lesson.

Although the mathematics is organised as a discrete subject in the timetable, there are many opportunities to include in a cross-curricular manner.
